The shadow is the “dark side” of our personality because it consists chiefly of primitive, negative human emotions and impulses like rage, desire, and the striving for power. However, we cut ourselves off from many of our best qualities too. All we deny in ourselves—whatever we perceive as inferior, evil, or unacceptable—become part of our life but they act in the shadow, and this happen also in our sexual life. The personal shadow is the disowned self. This shadow self represents the parts of us we no longer claim to be our own, including inherent positive qualities. We can’t eliminate the shadow. It stays with us as our dark brother or sister. Trouble arises when we fail to see it. For then, to be sure, it is standing right behind us. So here we are to get to know them and make them our friends and supporters.
